200 watts amp for 125 watts speaker??? - 06/23/14 04:34 PM

Guys,

I have been looking for a mono block amp for my B&w htm62 center channel speaker for quite some time . Manufacturer recommended max watts for that speaker is 120 watts. Sensitivity of that speaker is 87 db. Will 2200 be a overkill for that speaker?

Thanks in advance

I don't know. What are you driving the center with currently? The mono block may, or may not, be an upgrade depending on what you are using.

I am currently using Yamaha RX-V667. I am sure Outlaw mono block will be an upgrade to what I currently have. But my only worry is that will 200 watts be too much for my center channel?

As long as you control it, 200 watts will never be supplied to the center channel. If it worries you, place a slo-blo fuse in line on the positive side (1 amp) and it will protect the speaker from overload.

More speakers are blown every day by to little amount of watts than too much watts and 80 -90 % of the time you are useing only a small percentage of your available power

Insert an in line fuseholder from radioshack in the line on the positive terminal and connect the other end to your wire connection coming from the amp.

+speaker wire ==>[FUSE}==> +terminal on speaker

I think it would be hard to blow your center speaker, they are design to take for 20 milliseconds double their rated power conservative!

It's a cheap way to prevent damage if it worries you.
