No sound from subwoofer-990/oppo bdp-83 - 03/28/10 01:02 AM

I just took the plunge into the world of seperates and purchased the 990/7125 combo. The amp arrived Friday although it has some cosmetic damage(I'll have to wait till Monday for a reply from Outlaw on that). I did confirm that it's fuctionally ok. The problem I have is no output from the subwoofer(Sunfire). I have an oppo bdp-83 connected to the 990 by both direct multichannel analog 5.1 and stereo analog. Nothing gets sent to the sub from both inputs whether it's bluray, dvd or cd. I swapped the sub connection cable between the oppo and the 990, still no luck. The connection between the 990 and sub is good as the test tone during the set up came through the sub loud and clear.

I'm guessing I have a setting wrong somewhere. I followed Gonk's set up guide for the 990/oppo and have the secondary audio of the oppo turned off. The output is set to bitstream. The set up routine of the 990 did recognize the sub as present. Anyone's help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you get any activity from the sub if you use a digital connection from the Oppo to the 990 ?

Thanks for the reply KOYAAN.
I've tried both coax and optical digital connections, still no output from the sub. I have confirmed on the OSD that the correct audio input has been assigned. I'm at a complete loss at this point.

I just connected the subwoofer multichannel output line directly to my sub from the oppo and it did receive signal. The problem has to be either the way I have the 990 set up or a maybe a defect in the 990.

Here are a couple things to try:

  • With coaxial/optical output, try a calibration disc with Dolby Digital or DTS test tones and see if the subwoofer test tone works.
  • With the multichannel analog output, try the AIX test disc's subwoofer test tone.

If the first doesn't work, that would suggest the wrong setting for the BDP-83's digital output or an issue at the 990. If the second doesn't work, it would suggest a setting mistake or issue at the BDP-83.

Gonk is more experienced in this than I, but if you get a signal going directly from the Oppo to the sub, and no signal through the 990, I'd look for a problem in the 990.
You might want to particularly check you crossover settings on the 990( you may even want to jack them all up to 80 or even 100 for the sake of the test), make sure your speakers are all set to "small"on the 990 and make sure your speakers are all set to "large" on the Oppo.
As gonk recommended, a test disc is a good way to verify what's happening. (I use the Avia disc for such things).
If you still get no signal from the 990 to the sub, you might want to call tech support.
Do you get bass to the subwoofer from other sources ?
