No video so no OSD?

No video so no OSD? - 06/05/07 01:37 AM

For now I am bypassing my 970 for video and just using it for audio from my CD/DVD combo and Digital Cable box. My TV is older and has 1 composite and 1 S-video input so I ran the S-video from my DVD player. For the OSD, I tried to run a composite video cable from the "monitor out" jacks on my 970 to the TV but no luck. Any ideas?

I'm assuming that you are just trying to get the OSD with that connection, right? For that you'll want to go from the composite "monitor out" to the composite input on the TV, set the TV to the composite input, and press either the front panel "MENU" button or the "MENU" button on the remote (by first pressing "TNR" and then the "OSD/MENU" button). You will see nothing but a black screen until the menu pops up because you have no video inputs.

If I remember correctly, you also have a composite video output on the digital cable box. Have you considered running composite from it to the 970, s-video from the DVD player, and s-video from the 970 to the TV? It's mostly a convenience thing, but with just two inputs on the TV it also gives you the opportunity to add inputs if you wanted to.

Thanks Gonk, I've got all of the cables so I can try that. Just not quite sure what you mean by setting the TV to composite input?
Have you heard that connecting S-video on some older TV's (mine is 10 years old) will disable any other video input?

You've got to have the composite input active to see the 970's output - if there's only one choice for a line input (maybe called "AV" or something) then it is likely that the s-video overrides the composite. I think that my Mitsu (from 1997) had a line input that was either composite or s-video. In that case, I'd really suggest using the cabling suggestion in my previous post.
