Hey all,
Haven't been here in a while, but I just got back into vinyl, and I am having a difficult time choosing a cartridge for my new to me TT (Thorens TD 160 Super w/ Sumiko MMT Tonearm). Part of the problem is that the tonearm is missing the supplemental counterweight that is to be used in conjunction with the standard CW. This is limiting me to max 8g cart. The other issue is that it seems that this tonearm mates well with high output MC carts, but the recommended load resistance on these style carts are usually higher that the stat listed in the 2150 manual (47K ohms). In fact, both the MC and MM indicate 47K ohms. Is that correct? Perhaps a typo? My question is are we fairly limited to MM carts, even though there is a MC setting on the pre? I'm VERY new to all this compliance/ load resistance, and trying to learn on the fly. One cart I had decided on was the Denon DL 110 (HOMC), but it has a recommended load resistance of >47k. Any input/ suggestions greatly appreciated!

Have you tried to locate another Supplemental counterweight? Try the needle doctor or maybe Vinyl Engine sites. I am under the impression that the 47K ohms is standard for both types of cartridges. I have always thought that the reason the MC carts have lower output through the whole signal path is due to having to push against the same load as the MM carts. Since the MC carts have varying outputs over a larger range it would seem that someone would have a phono amp with a variable load capability.
